In the book Catcher in Rye why does Holden ask ackley about joining a monastery?

In the novel "The Catcher in the Rye", Holden does not ask Ackley about joining a monastery. However, Holden does briefly consider the idea of joining a monastery at one point in the story, but he quickly dismisses it.
