Why did James Whitcomb Riley write Little Orphan Annie?

James Whitcomb Riley did not write Little Orphan Annie. He wrote the poem "Little Orphant Annie" in 1885. The musical based on the character Annie opened on Broadway in 1977 and the movie was released in 1982.
