What was Madam Giry to the Phantom?

Madame Giry was the ballet mistress at the Palais Garnier opera house in Paris when the Phantom first appeared. At the beginning, she feared the Phantom more than anyone, but the more encounters she had with him the more she began to feel sorry for him. Over time she became his confidant and loyal ally, keeping his many secrets to the grave.
