In the movie to build a fire why does cold seem make no impression on man?

The cold does make an impression on the man in the movie "To Build a Fire." He continually struggles against it, trying to keep himself warm by building fires, wrapping himself in blankets, and running to stay active. The cold is a constant threat to his life and is ultimately the cause of his death.
