In the outsiders how did johnny kill a soc?

In the novel " The outsiders" by S. E Hinton, Johnny does not kill a Soc. It was actually Johnny's friend, Ponyboy who mistakenly killed a Soc named Bob in the heat of the moment. Later in the novel, Johnny loses his life while trying to save children trapped inside a burning church.
