Sleeping Beauty Fairy Gifts

In Charles Perrault's "The Sleeping Beauty in The Wood," the fairies in the story present gifts to a newborn princess. The King and Queen are so thrilled to finally have a child that they invite all of the fairies of the kingdom to attend the christening and serve as godmothers. However, they forgot to include the oldest fairy. The original fairy gifts in the story can serve as an inspiration to a new generation of gift-givers.
  1. Beauty, Wit and Grace

    • The first---and youngest---fairy gives the gift of beauty. She declares that the new princess will be the most beautiful person in the kingdom. The second and third fairies give gifts of wit and grace, and that these gifts should have angelic qualities and characteristics. If you are looking for a related gift, consider a brush and comb set, make-up or a charm school class.

    Artistic Talent

    • The next three fairies give artistic gifts. The princess receives the singing voice of a nightingale. She also gets the ability to dance with perfection. Included in the gift was the ability to play every known musical instrument and every kind of music to perfection. Your gift could be voice or instrumental music classes as well as dancing lessons.

    Two Other Gifts

    • Two fairies remained in hiding. One of them, the oldest and uninvited, gives a gift of a pierced finger that results in death. However, the other---a good fairy---gives a gift that changes this gift of destiny. She declares that the princess will not die, but will sleep instead for 100 years. In addition, the kiss of a handsome prince will wake her up, and she will marry him and become his queen. To represent these fairy gifts, you might give books of classic fairy tales with happy endings.
