How to Write a Simple Novel Outline

An novel outline is a process that authors use to plot the direction of their novels. While there are a variety of techniques available for outlining a novel, the simple outline is all a writer needs to help focus the direction of his work and stay on track. Writing a simple outline doesn't take a lot of time and allows you to create a direction for your novel without getting too wrapped up in the outline process.

Instructions

    • 1

Type the title of your chapter in all capital letters and format it as bold. Hit enter and drop down two spaces.

    • 2

Indent one tab and type a line or two that sums up the main focus of the chapter. Something like "Dan discovers Margaret is cheating on him." Italicize the main focus sentence of the chapter. Hit enter and drop down two more spaces. Write a synopsis of the chapter. An ideal length for the synopsis is one or two paragraphs, no more than about five lines for each paragraph. Don't stress if you write less or more. Summarize what happens in the chapter regarding the main focus lines.Skip the description and dialogue, unless you feel it is essential to moving your story forward. Stay with high points and story-changing events.

List must-happen items last, in sentence form. Examples: Dan must confront his wife about her cheating; Dan needs to have a reason to suspect something. Anything that needs to take place in this chapter to set up something in another chapter should be included as well.
