How to Tell If a Harry Potter Book Is a First Printing

The "Harry Potter" series by J.K. Rowling has been a wildly popular series with readers of all ages. First printings of any popular book, provided that they're in good condition, are generally worth more than later printings. Determining the printing of the "Harry Potter" books is a simple matter of checking the number line on the copyright page and the placement of the price and ISBN.

      Flip the book open to the copyright page. This page is usually located after the title page and before any dedications or the table of contents and is filled with legal language.

      Look at the bottom of the page for a descending series of numbers without any punctuation. It will appear as "10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1." If you have a first printing the number range will end at "1." If you have a second printing the number range will end at "2," etc.

      Check the inside flap of the book for the price. Check the back of the book jacket for the International Standard Book Number. All first printings have the price on the inside flap and the ISBN on the back of the book jacket.
