How to Arrange a Book

With the advent of the Internet and print-on-demand book publishers, self-publishing has become an affordable option for some writers. When preparing a book for self-publishing, it is important to arrange the book according to industry standards and traditions. The publishing process is fairly easy: Basically, a writer can upload a formatted document file to a print-on-demand site and order the finished book, which can be delivered within a week. Marketing a self-published book is not so easy, and if the self-publisher has not arranged the book according to industry standards, it will be even more difficult to successfully market it.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert several blank pages at the front of the book. It might be one page or several.

    • 2

Begin the printed portion of the book with one or two title pages. After a blank page, insert a title page that will appear on the right side of the book when opened. If you use two title pages, the first should list the title of the book and the second title page should include the title of the book, author's name and the name of the publisher.

    • 3

Add the copyright page to the back of the title page. If you have two title pages, this page should be placed on the back of the second title page. On the copyright page, include information on the publisher, copyright, declarations, Library of Congress and ISBN. This page should always appear on a left-hand page.

    • 4

Include the book's dedication page on a right-hand page, after the copyright page. After this page, you can include any acknowledgements, which should also begin on a right-hand page.

    • 5

Include a table of contents, with the first page beginning on a right-hand page, before the first page of the first chapter. Not all books have a table of contents. Some books have an index, which will be placed at the end of the book.

    • 6

Place odd-numbered pages on the right side and even-numbered pages on the left side. When a book is laid open, all the pages on the right side must be odd numbers, and all the pages on the left side must be even numbers. Printed page numbers typically begin after the table of contents.
