Download yWriter at http://www.spacejock.com/yWriter.html.
Open yWriter and type a title in the title slot at the top of the work space. After the word "by," insert your name. From the "Chapter" menu, click on "New Chapter." In the left pane, click on the new chapter to enter a title for the chapter and a description of the chapter's content.
Create a new scene from the "Scene" menu. Click "Create New Scene" and a new scene will begin. It will appear in the right task pane of the program. Double click on the scene and the built-in word processor will open. Begin typing your chapter.
Create and develop your characters as you write. Go to the "Characters" menu and click "Add New." A character sheet will appear. Use the character sheet to name your character, write a description for him, and indicate whether he is a major or minor character. You can also add a photograph, notes and goals for the character. When this information is complete, you can access it at any time during the course of writing the novel simply by accessing the "Character" tab located on the interface.
Add locations to your story from the "Locations" menu. Click "Add New" and a location sheet will appear. Name each location and write a description. You can access these location descriptions at any time during the writing process.
Set a daily word count. Go to the "Tools" menu and select "Set Daily Word Count." Set the starting and ending date along with your target words. yWriter will keep track of the words in your project as you write.
Print your finished project. From the "File" menu, you can choose to print the entire project with or without unused scenes and chapters. Use the "Reports" menu to indicate which draft you're printing and the status of the project.
