What inspired the Beach Boys to write God only Knows?

Brian Wilson was inspired by his therapist during a session to tell him about how it felt to love his wife. As per his therapist's advice, Wilson sat at the piano and began playing a progression to the lyrics "I may not always love you..." At the end of the session he thanked the therapist who he exclaimed "God only Knows" he could have saved his life today.
