Famous Themes for Yearbooks

A yearbook is a keepsake item that can capture various people, places, photos and occasions. Many people keep yearbooks to share with their children and grandchildren. Most yearbooks have a theme printed on the cover or first page. A theme is a saying or slogan that sets the general tone of the yearbook. A yearbook theme tells a story about the events and the people involved in them during each year.
  1. Seasons of Change

    • Tell the story of the year through the seasons. A different color can be used to represent each season, for instance, light blue for winter, green for spring, yellow for summer and orange for fall. Begin collecting photos and content at the beginning of the first season of the school year. Use seasonal images and scenery to decorate the pages for each season. This yearbook theme can even feature a "Student of the Season" or "Student of the Quarter."

    School Pride

    • Focus on the famous points of the school. Incorporate the history of the school and city where it is located. Talk about how the school was founded. If the school has any award-winning teams or clubs, add these details to the yearbook. Explain how the school mascot was selected and give some fun facts about that. Mention any attractions that are near the school. Boasting school pride is a popular yearbook theme.

    School Events

    • List all of the school activities that took place during the year. These can be events such as homecoming, games, student clubs, competitions, dances, talent shows, holiday celebrations, prom and other social activities. Use photos and captions to set the mood of each scene. Give background information on each event to recall what took place.

    Student Stories

    • Build an entire yearbook theme around the students. Dedicate one page to each student. Collect a time line of photos of each student---starting with baby photos---up to present day. Make a collage of photos on each student's page and tell the "Story of My Life" or "Life Stories." Ask the to student write the content and photo captions for the page. Give suggestions to spark creativity. For instance, students can submit funny stories or aspirations of what they want to be when they graduate.
