How to Read a Western Comic Book

In the golden age of comic books, finding stories in nearly every genre imaginable was fairly easy. From superheroes to horror, comedy to romance, science fiction to westerns, the comic book landscape was far reaching. In modern times, the vast majority of comic books contain super hero tales. While there are a handful of other genres, locating comics that aren't based on super heroic fiction is increasingly difficult. While comic creators and publishers have a hand in moving away from other genres such as westerns, often the publishers and creators make what the public buys.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the western comic book on a flat surface, or your lap. Open the cover to reveal the inside front cover and page one.

    • 2

Read page one from left to right, top to bottom in a "Z" formation to follow the story in a linear manner. The panels are laid out in sequential snapshots of the story, with dialogue in word balloons and caption boxes.

    • 3

Turn page one to the left to reveal page two and three. Read page two and then page three in the same manner you read page one. In some instances, an even and odd numbered page might contain one large image, called a double-page splash, which you should also read in the left-right-top-bottom "Z" manner.
