How to Make Your Thoughts Flow Freely

Opening your mind and helping your thoughts to flow freely and naturally is essential to the creative process, whether you are preparing to write, draw or learn. Writer's block, the inability to think of what to write next, or just the feeling of being creatively stumped, prevents you from moving through the creation process. Free writing is the process of spending a few minutes forcing yourself to write continuously on any subject. Also known as stream-of-consciousness writing, it is designed to open your mind to free-flowing thought.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather your materials before you begin, placing a piece of paper and a few pens in front of you. Alternately, if you intend to do your free writing on a computer, turn on your computer and open your word processor before you begin. Prevent any distractions during the process by closing your office door and lettings others know not to disturb you while you are working.

    • 2

Decide on a time limit for your writing, such as ten minutes or twenty minutes. Set a watch to count down the time for you, or use the timer on your computer.

    • 3

Start your timer, and begin writing. Keep your hand moving, or you hands typing, during the entire period. Avoid pauses to think, and never read back over what you have just written. Force yourself to continue. If you are working on a computer, turn off your monitor before you begin or turn the light down so low that you cannot see the words you are typing. Ignore grammar rules during the process.

    • 4

Write about anything you feel like writing about. If the process makes you feel uncomfortable or foolish, write about those feelings or about the process itself. Move from one topic to another if you feel like you need to change. Enjoy the frantic sense of free flowing thought you feel when you try to move your hands fast enough to capture your thoughts.

    • 5

Review your writing once you finish. Mark any phrases, words or ideas that seem interesting, either to expand on in your writing or for topics for future free writing sessions. Save your free writing work by saving it to its own file on your computer or storing it in a safe place, if you wrote it out by hand. Read it later for ideas and inspiration.
