How to Write a Keitai Shosetsu

Keitai Shosetsu, also known as mobile-phone fiction, are stories composed of small installments, perfect for the traveling reader. Though initially rejected as a form of literature, this Japanese genre is growing in interest and has even made its way over to the United States as more authors continue to join in creating Keitai Shosetsu. Though authors are generally commissioned to write Keitai Shosetsu, you can create your own with the use of text messaging or Twitter.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a short story, preferably as short as a page (but you can decide to make it as long as you want). Keeping it short will prevent your readers from forgetting early details as your story progresses.

    • 2

Break your story into 70 word portions. Keep in mind that as you write your story, you should shorten your sentences and keep your thoughts condensed. Feel free to abbreviate as necessary.

    • 3

Send the individual texts to your friends and family. If you are using a cell phone, you need only follow Steps 1-3. If using Twitter, skip to Step 4.

    • 4

Sign on to Twitter or create an account.

    • 5

Enter your message and click send. Your message on Twitter is limited to 140 characters. You will send your followers updates of your Keitai Shosetsu. By using Twitter, you can interact with your followers as well.
