What Is the Correct Way to Make a Cover Page in APA Style?

The APA (American Psychological Association) sets formatting guidelines required for all papers written in this format. Every aspect of a paper must adhere to these guidelines, including the title page. Formatting a cover page isn't difficult and will ensure your paper meets all of the APA requirements set forth in the style guidelines.
  1. Running Header

    • A running header should be included on the title page. This should include the page number set to flush right and the title of your paper set to flush left. The running header appears on your title page and every other page of the paper.

    Title of Paper

    • The title is centered in the upper half of your title page. Between five and six double spaces is recommended. Type your title in upper- and lowercase letters, referred to as title case, as appropriate to the words in the title. This means all words should be capitalized except for articles ("a," "an") and prepositions and conjunctions four letters or less ("but," "or," "for," "on"). The first and last word of the title should always be capitalized. APA guidelines recommend no more than 12 words and no abbreviations in the title. Excessively long titles may take up to two lines.

    Author's Name

    • A double space appear between the title and the name of the author. The author's name is written first, middle and last. Do not use titles such as "Dr." or list your degrees. The name of the author is centered beneath the title.

    Institutional Affiliation

    • The name of the institutional affiliation centered one double space below the name of the author. For a school paper, this would be the name of the school the author is attending. The name of the instructor is not required on a paper formatted this way.
