How to Get Your Library to Use OverDrive

OverDrive is a library service that allows patrons to instantly access millions of audiobooks, e-books and video resources. Anyone with an account at a participating library can download resources to personal devices like MP3 players and e-readers. Just like a physical library, not all items in OverDrive’s collection are available to everyone at once. Some patrons may have to wait in line to access an item and have a limited window of time in which to use it. If order to persuade your library to use this service, you’ll need to gather community support and speak with the library's director.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit your library and ask a reference librarian what services they offer that are similar to OverDrive. It is possible that your library already offers an alternative service of e-books and audiobooks. Ask for the librarian’s opinion on OverDrive and see if you can build a partnership with them.

Build excitement and support in your community using a petition.

Create a petition and distribute it to members of your community. Explain what OverDrive has to offer in order to solicit support.

    • 3

Meet with the director of your library. The director of your public library makes large purchasing decisions and can bring your idea to the library board of trustees. Bring your petition and speak to the director about why you want OverDrive at your library.

    • 4

Follow up and be persistent. Large purchasing decisions take time, so follow up with the library director and board of trustees to make sure that they are considering your petition.
