How to Attend an Anime Expo

Anime is the common name given to Japanese animation art. Typically grouped with manga (Japanese comic book art), anime is very popular throughout the world. Anime Expo is an annual event held in Southern California, typically around July 4. Since 1992, gamers, companies and anime enthusiasts gather at the Anime Expo to witness the latest trends in anime production and merchandise, and to fraternize with like-minded individuals.

Instructions

  1. Plan Your Trip to Anime Expo

    • 1

Visit industry guests at various booths set up throughout the convention. Bring your autograph book and camera to capture meetings with famous anime artists, actors and notable corporate sponsors.

    • 2

Attend industry panels with some of your favorite anime experts or guests. You may have to pre-register for these events before you can attend.

    • 3

Take part in various contests throughout the Anime Expo to enhance your experience. Yearly contests include the Masquerade, Karaoke Contest, Anime Music Video Contest and the "AX Idol Contest" (the Expo's version of American Idol).

    • 4

Attend late-night activities at the Anime Expo convention. You can choose from dances, video and gaming rooms and open-mic karaoke at any point during the overnight hours. Industry sponsors often make these events just as entertaining as daytime panels and symposiums by offering prizes and giveaways.

    • 5

Pre-purchase tickets for Anime Expo online or at a local ticket outlet office (see resources below). You can choose from a 1-day, 2-day or 4-day all-inclusive pass. Each is priced according to how early you buy, so be sure to lock in the lowest price by purchasing up to 7 months in advance.

    • 6

Satisfy a desire to "cosplay" and dress in costume to role-play as a favorite anime or manga character. Other cosplay genres include tokusatsu, Japanese live action shows, Japanese pop music stars, fantasy movies (like Lord of the Rings), Visual Kei, action TV shows and even novels. The Anime Expo welcomes cosplay among attendees and often awards prizes to the best-dressed participants.
