How to Write Sports Articles

One of the parts of the newspaper that people read most often is the sports page. It is a quick, easy and inexpensive way to keep current with favorite teams, players and trends in the sports world. Sports writers need to have a thorough understanding of the events they write about in their articles. Their writing appeals to a broad range of people and should remain neutral, yet informative.

Instructions

    • 1

Have a good working knowledge of the sports you want to write about. Know the rules of the game and be able to follow the action. Borrow books from your public library to learn more about particular sports.

    • 2

Read the sports page of the newspaper to get a feel for the writing style and tone used in sports articles. See what kinds of articles hold readers' interest and what sports topics are considered "hot."

    • 3

Attend a live sporting event and experience the excitement of the game. It can be so much easier to write an article about a player or a game that you witness firsthand.

    • 4

Make notes of the points you want to cover in your article before you begin to write. Creating an outline can help organize your thoughts and provide a structure for your writing.

    • 5

Check your facts on the players and teams that you profile in your articles. Be sure that the statistics about the teams' playing records are accurate.

    • 6

Remain courteous and unbiased when writing about sports. It is acceptable to say that a particular athlete did not have a good game because of errors she made. Saying that she is a terrible player and the other team or opponent is the best is poor sportsmanship.

    • 7

Choose a style guide to follow when writing your articles. Examples of the most common two formats used in writing, MLA and APA, are widely available online (see Resources below). Ask your editor at the publication for which you are writing which format he prefers for sports articles.

    • 8

Proofread your sports article when you are finished writing. Double check the spelling of any unusual or difficult last names. Rework any awkward passages and make corrections to typing errors.
