Read different types of autobiographies. Writers develop and refine their writing skills by reading and emulating other writers. Autobiography is a specific genre but the autobiography genre has many different methods and writing styles. St Augustine's "Confessions," written in the fourth century and documenting his spiritual journey, is considered one of the first examples of an autobiography. Benjamin Franklin's autobiography is considered one of the classics of the genre.
Keep a journal or diary. A daily journal is one of the best resources for autobiographical information. Keeping a journal helps to sharpen your writing skills. A journal also helps to make you more self-aware and reflective about the events, experiences and people in your life.
Research material for the book. In addition to a journal, a number of other sources provide valuable insights and information. Look at old photos, videos and family albums. Interview family, friends and colleagues. Discussing the details of important events with a variety of people provides a broader perspective and framework.
Write a rough outline for the book. Pick a starting point. Maybe you want to discuss your whole life or only a certain part of it. Decide how much detail you wish to go into. For example, you might want to discuss your parents and grandparents or maybe not. Divide the outline into specific chapters. Sketch out the specific details that you wish to include in each chapter.
Select a tone and narrative style for the book. Autobiographies can employ a number of styles and techniques. Some autobiographies are humorous and lighthearted while others are more serious in tone. Many writers wish to convey a broader message and share lessons with the reader about what they have learning in life. Some autobiographies attempt to present straightforward accounts of the author's life while other autobiographies are interested in shocking the reader.
Develop a writing schedule. Set up a specific time to write and stick to it. Develop a schedule that is realistic and that doesn't conflict with your other responsibilities. Writing a couple of hours in the morning or in the evening adds up. Determine how much you want to do each day. Some writers like to write one finished and polished page per day while others will write a rough draft of a chapter and then spend time polishing and refining the chapter.
Share your work with family and friends and ask for their insights, input and criticisms. Don't be shy. The purpose of writing an autobiography is to have people read it.
