How to Write in Third Person

How to Write in Third Person. The third person is like the all seeing, all knowing person telling the story from each character's point of view. The third person includes character names and pronouns like "he" and "she." This tense is considered more academic and more formal than writing in the first or second person. It also seems less biased when arguments are presented. Follow these tips to write in the third person.

Instructions

    • 1

Introduce the characters in your stories by name the first time you bring the character into the story. Describe the characters as you see them. For example, describe their hair color, build, height.

    • 2

Describe their thoughts in third person using their names. For example, "Alex thought the man was too thin."

    • 3

Write from the point of view of each character in the story not just the main character. Include character names, descriptions and dialog.

    • 4

Let everyone speak and tell the story from their own point of view. Use dialog from each person. Use "he said" or "she said" when writing the dialog. Pretend you are telling someone else about each character so that it remains in third person.

    • 5

Use the pronouns "he" and "she" in place of the names, not "I" or "you."

    • 6

Read magazines and newspapers for examples of third person. Many novels are written this way.

    • 7

Stay in the third person point of view. You don't to confuse readers by shifting to "I" or "We." Write what you see as an observer or what the character sees.
