How to Write a Book Manuscript

It’s often been said that every person has at least one book inside of him. In reality, many people simply dream of writing a book, but never actually take the action necessary to fulfill that dream. Writing a book manuscript can be an exhilarating experience, but it’s also an exciting challenge that requires dedication and motivation.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what type of book manuscript you will write: Will you write a work of non-fiction, creative non-fiction, or fiction, or a biography, or some other type of book?

    • 2

Brainstorm ideas for your book, and choose the one you like best.

    • 3

Set goals, so your dream of writing a book manuscript actually becomes a reality. Writers are notorious for procrastinating, so consider setting writing goals for yourself: For example, set a goal to write 1,000 words a day, 20 pages a week or whatever works best for your schedule.

    • 4

Conduct research, if your book requires it. Keep in mind that, while researching online can be effective, there are many resources available to you at your local library, university libraries and by interviewing experts.

    • 5

Outline your book. While some writers prefer not to outline their book manuscript before beginning to write, outlining is beneficial because it provides you with a map of where your book is going, helping you to avoid getting stuck.

    • 6

Write your book manuscript. Again, it all comes down to preference: some writers prefer sitting down and writing their draft straight through while others prefer to edit as they go along.

    • 7

Put your manuscript aside after you’ve completed it. Distance will allow you to later read and edit it with fresher, more objective eyes.

    • 8

Edit your book manuscript. While you’re editing it for content, make sure you correct any typos, grammar or spelling mistakes.

    • 9

Identify potential publishers of your book, and note the submission requirements you will have to meet.

    • 10

Write a book proposal that you will submit to the publishers you have identified. Your book proposal should be succinct and the first paragraph should compel the editor to read your entire proposal.
