How to Write a Book in 10 Days

Perhaps you have friends and family urging you to write a book. You've thought about it and you do have great ideas for a book. Now is the time to take the challenge and get that book written. Once you see how quickly the work goes, you will write several more. It is possible to write a book in 10 days, but you should treat these 10 days as a full-time job. You will still have to proofread and edit your book later. For now, though, just grab that pen or laptop and start writing.

Brainstorm for the first day. Decide whether you are going to write a fiction or non-fiction book. If you are writing fiction, where will you find your story? Consider rewriting a story from the Bible or other historical text. You also might write a story from an event that happened in your life. If you decide to write a non-fiction book, narrow down all the subjects you are passionate about, and choose one you can develop into a full-length book.

Spend the second day making a detailed outline of your book. Prepare a list of topics to cover for non-fiction. For fiction, make lists of your characters, and choose a time and place for a setting. Outline the story line of your book by making detailed notes of each chapter. By the end of the day, you should have created a blueprint to follow as you write your book.

For the next 8 days, remove all distractions. Turn off the phone, and hang a "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door. Devote yourself entirely to your book.
Your goal in the next 8 days is to get the story written. Ignore spelling, grammar and sentence structure as you write. Don't edit yourself as you write. Editing will come later. Get the story on paper in rough draft form. Highlight sections with a highlighter pen or with your word processor highlighting tool that you know will need more research or elaboration later. Feel free to jot down notes to yourself in the margins, but keep writing.

Write a minimum 15 pages per day. Shoot for 20. If you write for 6 hours per day, producing 2 1/2 pages per hour, you will have written 15 pages. In 8 days, writing 15 pages per day, you will have written a book of 120 pages. That 120 typed pages roughly equals 240 pages of the average 6-by-9 inch softcover book.
