How to Stop Buying Self Help Books

I went through a stage where I would go to the library or the book store and pick up self help books. I can't imagine how much wasted energy, time, and money that I put into this habit. Here's how I broke the habit.

Things You'll Need

  • self help books
  • bon fire (just kidding)
  • quality literature
  • topics of interest that are not self help

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the book store or library and pick up a few self help books. It doesn't matter what topic it is on. Usually the topics are about health and weight loss.

    • 2

Read the summaries and skim the chaper lists to get the gist of each book.

    • 3

Notice any similarieties? Most of them have a "You can do this!" chapter one. Chapter two is "Why you should do this." Chapter three is " You can do this!" Chapter four and on are obvious steps that you already know about and don't need to read through. The last chapter is a summary of how wonderful a person you are and how great this book is and how you should recommend it to everyone you know.

    • 4

Gather your self help books and put them in a bag.

    • 5

Recycle your self help books. You can also donate them but why perpetuate the madness any further?

    • 6

Stay away from the self help section of the store or library.

    • 7

Before you go to the store or library, have a topic, author, or genre in mind that you are intersted in and pick up a book on that.

    • 8

Remember that self help books are made to make money, not help you.

    • 9

Self help is different from a how to. For example: a self help title example is "The Amazing Weight Loss Solution." A how to title example is "How to Grow a Home Garden." These books are much more worthwhile.
