How to Make an Audiobook

Making an audiobook allows your reader a different path to access your book as opposed to the traditional hard copy. While you could always hire a voice-over talent to make your audiobook through websites such as Voices.com and Voices123.com, you can easily do it yourself. A self-recorded audiobook will be special to your readers-listeners because they will know they are hearing the author's voice.

Instructions

    • 1

Create your home studio. To create your personal home studio, you must have a sound card on your computer, microphone, pop filter and audio recording software. Use high-quality microphones such as the Sennheiser MKH-416, Neumann TLM 103, or the Telefunken R-F-T AK47 to get the best sound. To view and compare voice talent microphones, click on the link in "Resources." Adobe Audition and Garage Band are two popular audio recording software programs that you can purchase.

    • 2

Place a blanket or acoustic foam in the area you are recording to absorb background noise and improve playback quality. The HarlanHogan.com website sells a portable booth that contains foam for recording.

    • 3

Connect your microphone to your computer using the cables provided. Open your recording software program. Place the pop filter a couple of inches in front of your mouth so that it is positioned between your mouth and the microphone. Begin recording by reading your book into the microphone. Be sure to enunciate your words clearly. It's OK to practice using different dialects to ensure that you are getting the sound you want.

Save your audio file as a .mp3 file when you have finished recording the book. You can also save the audio files by chapter. This will allow your listener to click on the chapter they want to listen to instead of having to search through the audio file for the part they want to listen to.

Burn the MP3 file of your audiobook to CD . This is great if you will be selling a hard copy of the audiobook. Otherwise, a simple MP3 file stored on your computer is sufficient, since it can be emailed to others and posted on websites as a link.
