Novel Ideas for Book Clubs

Sometimes choosing the novels to read for a book club is a difficult thing to do. When you group by theme, it becomes much easier. Keep in mind that unless you want to limit membership entry to the formation of a new group, it is a good idea to exclude sequels.
  1. Jane Austen-themed Book Clubs

    • Book clubs with a Jane Austen theme, in addition to being common, are easy to find books for: "Mansfield Park," "Emma," "Pride and Prejudice," "Sense and Sensibility," "Northanger Abbey," and "Persuasion". In order to have more than six sessions, try Austen-related books like "The Jane Austen Book Club" and "Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman."

    Mystery-Themed Books Club

    • Mystery-themed book clubs have two options: following one detective over a series of adventures, or hitting many different series. Examples are the Miss Marple series, the Sherlock Holmes series or the Poirot series.

    Horror-Themed Books Club

    • Stephen King is a great source of horror fiction, as is H. P. Lovecraft. (Refer to Resources below.)

    Contemporary Women's Literature Book Club

    • Novels by Alice Walker, Jeanette Winterson, Toni Morrison and Margaret Atwood--all award-winners--are good choices for contemporary women's literature.

    Nobel Winners Book Club

    • Choose a novel from a Nobel Prize winner and go back through the years. You can find a list in the Resources section.

    Children's Literature Book Club

    • Children's literature can accommodate both an adult's and a children's book club. Try such classics as "A Secret Garden," "The Phantom Tollbooth," "Little Women," "The Princess and the Goblin" and "Bridge to Terabithia." Look also at award-winners; refer to the Resources section for a link to a database.
