Write a detailed plan of what your characters are doing and saying throughout the story. Doing so ensures that your page by page art will not be too long or too short. Using a script also helps in adding symbolism or themes to your story. How detailed your script should be depends on whether the person drawing the comic book will be the same person who writes it.
Draw out your individual pages, panel by panel. Your main consideration at this point should be the best way to depict each character and action and must have a good sense of pacing and character design. Having an especially unique art style or being a skilled draftsman also helps.
Next, outline your pencil art in black ink since pencil art is not suitable for reproduction. Having a steady hand is essential for this part of the process. An inker must also translate the gray tones created by pencil into different values using various crosshatching techniques.
Add the word balloons and various sound effects generally found in comics. A vector-based computer program like Adobe Illustrator works best for this. You should also consider design and how different fonts will look during this stage of the process.
Your last step will be to add color to the black and artwork. Use a raster-based computer graphics program like Adobe Photoshop or Corel Painter. As a colorist, you must have a good understanding of color theory and be savvy using the computer. A colorist also creates the special effects found on comic book pages.
