How to Draw Colorado's State Flower

The Rocky Mountain columbine, or Aquilegia saximontana, is a treasured Colorado plant. The lavender and white columbine, which thrives in July and August, has its only native habitat in Colorado, in the alpine and subalpine areas of the Rocky Mountains. Though some confusion exists regarding whether the state flower is the Aquilegia caerulea, both flowers are visually very similar, and the same techniques can be used to depict them. Since both flowers are given state flower status, there are legal consequences to picking either one.

Instructions

  1. How to Draw Colorado's State Flower

    • 1

With a pencil, draw a circle where the center of the flower will be.

    • 2

From this circle, depict oval-shaped petals. The inside petals of the lavender and white columbine are short, stubby and shaped like teardrops.

    • 3

Beneath these petals, draw another layer of petals. The Rocky Mountain columbine has two rows of petals, with the outside row being longer, sharp-pointed and thinner.

    • 4

Add detail to the flower's center. The pistil of Colorado's state flower looks like a light yellow cloud. Draw over the pencil with pen and ink, if you want to darken your lines.

    • 5

Color the illustration with paint, crayons or colored pencils. The inside petals are white or light lavender, and the outside petals are a deeper lavender.
