How to Make Your Own Comic on the Computer

Comic books used to be a very painstaking process, but drawing software such as Adobe Photoshop and even more specialized programs like Comic Book Creator make the process much easier. You can design and draw your own comic book directly on the computer, then print it out, or even self-publish it through a small press organization. Even with the software, however, you still need to understand the steps by which a comic book is made.

Instructions

    • 1

Write up a script for your comic book. It should describe the action and dialogue of each panel of each page, forming a blueprint for the entire story from beginning to end. Remember to keep dialogue and narrative sparse; there's only so much space per panel to set aside for words.

    • 2

Set up each page of space in your comic book software program, dividing it into panels as you see fit. Most comic book pages have from one to eight panels, arranged to let the action flow seamlessly from one panel to the next. Most comic book pages are 10 by 15 inches, which can then be shrunk in the printing process. If you intend to print your comic through a service, contact them and ask for their preferred page dimensions.

    • 3

Lay down the lines of each panel's drawing, sticking to sketches without coloring any of the images in. When establishing the drawing, maker sure you leave some space for word balloons and sound effects in the frame. You can do this by drawing "incidental" space such as buildings in the background which won't disrupt the action if you cover them with word balloons.

    • 4

Color in the images using the color palate, filling in the spaces between your ink lines. It's a good idea to save specific shades of color so that you can use them frame after frame (ensuring that someone's costume is the same shade of red every time, for example).

    • 5

Add dialogue, thoughts and other pieces of narrative to each frame as dictated by your script. Omniscient narrative is usually placed in a box at the top or the bottom of the frame. Spoken dialogue uses a white oval-shaped balloon, lined with black and with a small triangle-shaped protrusion leading to the character's mouth. Thought bubbles--internal dialogue that lets us know what the characters are privately thinking--have a puffier cloud shape and a series of small ovals leading to the character's head. Specific comic drawing programs likely have preset word balloons and thought balloons. With other drawing programs, create a separate layer for your word balloons, then make them yourself by drawing an oval shape and filling it in with words.

    • 6

Prepare a cover for your comic: a single panel with the top quarter holding the title. Comic book covers should be dynamic and engaging, with a piece of action that conveys the story inside without giving too much away. You may wish to include space for a small balloon containing promotional text ("Can Amazing Man Survive the Wrath of the Warmonger?" or something similar).

Double-check your comic book for any typos or grammatical errors, then print it out.
