Sort through any old hardback books for possible appraisal. Look for those that are first edition and contain original artwork. Take them to a book expert or buyer for inspection and research possible methods of selling the books such as auctions, online options and advertising in collector's magazines.
Sell or donate paperbacks or newer hardbacks online. Book series can be sold together for extra cash and will usually go for more money if they are hardback. Thrift stores usually take book donations. Churches, schools, libraries, day care facilities, shelters and correctional facilities welcome book donations and usually always need them.
Re-gift new books if you already own them or have read them, if possible. Books make a thoughtful gift. New books can usually be returned for store credit if brand new, and will not require a receipt if it was a gift; however, this can vary according to store policy.
Donate books to recycling organizations who will grind them into pulp to be used for assorted paper and plastic items. Books can turned into cardboard boxes, pizza boxes, building products and plastic pen barrels. Organizations like Green Earth Recyclers give large cardboard boxes to college bookstores for free to collect unwanted books for recycling.
