How to Store Old Bibles

Books can have high sentimental value, especially when they are of a religious nature and from a family's country of origin. According to the National Library of Scotland, bibles from the 18th century to the present rarely have much monetary value due to their number -- but an old bible can be priceless because of what it means to a family. For this reason it is important to store and care for it properly, to ensure it can be enjoyed by generations to come.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a room to store the bible in. Consider factors such as temperature, humidity level and the amount of direct sunlight. Preferably the temperature of the room will be constant and cool -- 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit is desirable. The humidity should also be stable, staying 40 to 60 percent. It is important that the book not be in direct sunlight as this can increase the acidity of the pages and bleach the cover, according to the National Library Of Scotland.

Chose a bookshelf. A metal bookshelf with an enamel finish is better then a wood bookshelf, according to Conserve O Gram, a National Park Service publication on caring for museum objects. If a wood book shelf is used, make sure to seal it to prevent acidity transferring from the wood to the book.

    • 3

Position the bible upright on the shelf, gently supported on each side by a book or bookends of a similar size. In the case of an especially large bible, lie it horizontally on the shelf. This is only necessary if the book is taller then 18 inches or wider then three inches, according to the National Park Service.

    • 4

Dust the book frequently to prevent mold from growing. The National Library of Scotland says to gently take the book and lightly brush the outside of it with a small brush. Exercise caution when handling the book, particularly if it was printed in the mid-19th century or more recently. More modern books are more acidic due to the method of printing and can be brittle.

    • 5

Clean the room regularly to reduce the risk of rodents and insects harming the book. Following these steps will keep your old bible in excellent condition so it can continue to be read for years.
