Take notes while reading the book. After each chapter write down a summary of what happened. Label each summary with the chapter number.
Refer to your teacher's instructions on what needs to be included in the book report. Each teacher will want something different so know her expectations. How you write your book report will depend on the teacher as well.
Begin the outline. Make changes where necessary or if your teacher specifies certain details.
Write out the first heading titled, "Setting." Add subheadings discussing the time period of the book, where it took place, if it's a real place and other subheadings you think might be pertinent. Add details under the subheadings about the setting.
Title the second heading, "Characters." Write subheadings with each character's name and basic details about the characters, including personality traits, relationships with other characters and how each played a role in the book.
Have the third heading be titled, "Plot." You might want to have each subheading be the chapter numbers like "Chapter 1," "Chapter 2" and so on. Put basic details about the important events that happened under each chapter subheading.
Add additional outline headings that your teacher might want like comparison to another book or your opinion about the book.
Refer to your outline when writing the rough draft of your book report.
