How to Write a Harvard Style Bibliography

When writing reports, articles or papers that require information from outside sources, it is important to correctly reference each source used. Failing to correctly reference sources may be grounds for an accusation of plagiarism. Using the Harvard Style of referencing to write a bibliography ensures that all sources and influences are properly referenced in your work. Writing a bibliography presents the sources in an organized way.

Instructions

  1. Books

    • 1

      Type the author's surname as a start to the reference, with the first letter of the name capitalized. Follow the name with a comma.

      Type the author's initials in capital letters after the comma. Place periods after each capitalized letter. Follow the last period with a comma.

      Type the book's publication year. Follow it with a period.

    • 4

      Type the full book title in italics. Capitalize the first word and any proper nouns in the title. Follow with a period.

      Type the edition number. Follow it with the abbreviation "ed" and a period. Skip this step if the book is a first edition.

      Type the place of publication. Follow it with a colon.

      Type the publisher, which is usually a company name. Follow it with a period.

    Journal Articles
