Tolkien wrote his books in the following order:

1. The Hobbit (written between 1930 and 1932, published in 1937)

2. The Lord of the Rings (written between 1937 and 1949, published in separate volumes in 1954 and 1955)

3. The Silmarillion (written over several decades, but not published until after Tolkien's death in 1977 by his son Christopher)
