How to Become a Christian Writer & Get Published

Writing Bible-based fiction or nonfiction can be challenging but also fulfilling. It helps spread Christianity and aspects of Christian living. It can give people hope during troubled times, and the inspiration to live a life of goodwill and peace.

A Christian writer needs to know the basic moral and religious concepts of the Bible and Christianity, and how to apply them to a story or true account of an event or life. Bible references must be correctly interpreted, and citations must be accurate.

Instructions

  1. The Process

    • 1

Examine the current market for Christian publications. Research what other authors are writing and what is popular among readers. Take a writing course, or study books on writing and on the Christian publishing market.

    • 2

Write what you know. Pick a religious topic or theme that you are familiar with, and research the subject thoroughly. You'll write better and more easily when you write about what you know, understand, and are comfortable with.

    • 3

Make an outline. This will give you both a starting point and a guide as you begin to write. Don't worry if your outline changes as you progress; this is natural and to be expected as new ideas come to you and your article, story or book takes fuller shape.

    • 4

Write every day. Establish a minimum number of pages and words as your daily goal. Write in the same place at the same time every day. This will foster discipline and more concentrated work.

    • 5

Recruit both friends and objective people who are familiar with and enjoy Christian literature to read your work and comment. If you belong to a writers group, it is an excellent source of critiques and suggestions.

    The Fruition

    • 6

Send out query letters to agents and publishing companies. Target those that represent the genre in which you are writing, such as Christian fiction, non-fiction, inspiration or essay. Include an outline of the work, and sample passages from the book or article. Explain why you think your book or article is good and why it would appeal to people who usually buy literature in this genre.

    • 7

Follow up your query letter with professional emails or short phone calls. Don't call every day, but call or email often enough to be noticed without becoming a pest. If your query is rejected, send it to other agents and publishers. If the rejection letter includes any suggestions, take them to heart. Keep trying. It takes time, effort and fortitude to get a first work published.

    • 8

Cooperate with editing requirements and suggestions when your Christian publication is accepted. Be aware that there will almost always be a need for adjustments, additions and deletions, so be flexible and accommodating with editors without relinquishing your vision for the work. The editing process involves respectful give-and-take.

    • 9

Involve yourself as much as possible in the publishing process, from helping to select a book jacket design to participating in decisions about marketing methods. Be prepared to go on book tours and book signings to help market your book.

    • 10

Send a thank-you letter to everyone involved in the project. Include them in the acknowledgment section of your book. Remember that writing and publishing any kind of work is a team effort.
