How to Write My Autobiography for Free Online

Everybody has a story to tell. Whether your life has been full of accomplishments or littered with hurdles, you have a story you want to share with the world in written form. Encyclopedia Britannica defines this as an autobiography, "the biography of oneself narrated by oneself." Even if you're not a published author, writing your autobiography and distributing it online for free is both possible and within reach.

Instructions

    • 1

Search for an online home for your autobiography. Several websites allow you to upload your autobiography and pictures so others can view it for free (see Resources). These sites also allow you to purchase copies of your autobiography in print form for a small price. Whether you download your story, print and package it with your own binder, or send it to a loved one's email inbox, your life story now has a home.

    • 2

Register to use your online autobiography. Create a username and password to access your online autobiography.

    • 3

Determine the reason for your autobiography. Your online autobiography site will help you with this by offering options such as "family history," "special events" or "things I've learned." Perhaps you want to give others advice regarding similar life-hurdles you've overcome. Maybe you want to provide your children and grandchildren with memorable moments in your life. Whatever the reason, it's important to write your autobiography with a purpose in mind.

    • 4

Understand your audience. Your grammar and usage will not be as important if you are writing your autobiography for your family members rather than the general population. Additionally, family members will understand certain terminology and references that a general stranger might not.

    • 5

Establish a theme. Ask yourself how the circumstances that will be depicted in your autobiography have changed you and what you have learned as a result. A theme brings your autobiography full circle and makes it more interesting to the reader. Your online autobiography site will help you establish a theme by providing you with a page of examples from which you can branch your own ideas.

    • 6

Organize a time line by choosing from a list of options from the autobiography website. You can choose from choices such as "childhood memories," "teenage years" or "memorable adults I have met."

    • 7

Collect and organize photos. Find photos of yourself, memorable places and encounters during the various stages of your life that will be defined by your autobiography. Most autobiographies contain pictures of the narrator as he grows into the person he has become. If you have the photos available on your computer, simply upload them to the autobiography website. If not, use a scanner to copy the pictures to your computer.

    • 8

Write your autobiography online to share with the world. After writing each chapter or paragraph, be sure to save it. If you want your readers to read your autobiography segment by segment, choose the "share" feature after completing each chapter. If you plan on waiting until your autobiography is complete, choose the "share" feature when you have finalized your autobiography.
