How to Publish Books on CDs

Publishing books on CDs is an excellent way for an author to self-publish their work for a fraction of the cost. Most modern computers will already contain a CD Rewriter, so the only additional expense should be purchasing the CDs and then mailing them to customers. The cover of the book can also be printed via a home computer and the book itself can be created on a free program such as WordPad. This article describes publishing a CD book through Windows XP.

Design your book in a way that will make it easy to navigate. There are two easy ways to do this. Create a web page and insert hyperlinks of chapters or sections on every page. The hyperlinks method can also be used for a book that contains several images. An efficient way to create a book is to use WordPad. Each text file will be self contained and bold type should be used for headings. Each chapter or section can then be found in the book's folder, with each text file being described as 'Chapter One,' 'Chapter Two' and so forth. If using images, give them a descriptive name, so they will also be easy to find in the folder.

Insert a blank CD rewritable disc into your CD Rewriter. Open My Computer in Windows XP. Drag and drop the folder that contains your book files to Audio CD, which is indicated by an image of a CD disc, with a musical note on top.

Create a cover for your book. A basic cover designed with WordPad should make full use of the bold, italics, underscore, color, size and font options. Someone with a basic grasp of sophisticated desktop publishing software and graphics software will be able to design something that looks professional. Print out a draft of your cover and you'll then be able to see if it is ready.

Begin advertising your book through social media. Inform local media about your book and try and set up an interview for yourself in a local newspaper, or on a radio or TV station. Do this two months before you plan to publish your book and make it clear how the book can be obtained. By the time the publishing date is due you will have an estimate of how many CDs you will need to copy.
