How to Get Your Book Listed on Amazon

When books are published, they are typically distributed by a company that gets books listed on Amazon. If you are not using a distribution company that has an affiliation with Amazon's distribution channel or are self-publishing, there is another way to get your book listed on Amazon on your own. You can apply to Amazon's Advantage program and distribute the book to Amazon yourself.

Get an ISBN for your book if you do not already have one. R.R. Bowker handles all ISBN orders from their website (see Resources). Getting the ISBN requires providing your email address, credit card information and selecting the number of ISBNs that you want. A business name is needed for the application, as ISBNs are typically issued in the name of a publishing company. The R.R. Bowker Barcode Service converts the ISBN to a bar code for the back of the book.

Go to the Amazon website. Navigate to the Amazon Advantage program page. Eligibility requirements for the program include having North American distribution rights for the book, Internet access, an email address, ISBN bar code and agreement to the membership requirements.

    • 3

Click “Apply Now” to create a new vendor account with Amazon. Enter in your email address, name, address and book information. As of December 2009, there is a $29.95 annual membership fee for Amazon Advantage.

Wait for an email order from Amazon and mail your books to the address they give you. This will get your books listed as available for sale on Amazon.
