Xeric Foundation reviews applications for comic book publishing grants twice a year. As of 2010, deadline dates were March 31 and September 30. Applicants usually receive a decision within about 10 weeks of the deadline.
Like most grants, Xeric Foundation requires a detailed proposal of the comic book to be self-published, contributor resumes and a budget that outlines exactly what costs will be necessary to carry out the creator’s vision. A financial statement--on a foundation-provided form that can be downloaded and printed from the website--is also required as part of the application.

Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators offers its members a number of grant and awards programs that could be used for book publication and associated expenses. Membership is open to any prospective children’s author, whether writing fiction or nonfiction. You could also write for teenagers and still be eligible for membership and pursuing a grant. However, members can only apply to one grant per year. Also, once a member wins a grant additional awards will not be offered to that same author in the future.
Offered programs include a “works-in-progress” grant, a nonfiction research grant, and awards specifically for authors who have never had a children’s book published. Additional grant options include opportunities for writers of young adult-oriented novels as well as children’s picture books.
