How to Self Print an Inexpensive Picture Book

Making your picture book idea into a reality is not as hard as it was before the advent of digital publishing technology. Using modern graphic design software and online digital publishing resources you can self print a picture book for a very low cost. Whereas in the past a book would have a print run of at least several hundred, nowadays it's possible to print off copies of your book one at a time, which is where most of the savings come into play.

Come up with the story and layout for your picture book. Before you start making final page drafts for your book it's important to lay out the text and determine the page count. Once you know the text for the book, divide it up into pages and then write notes about the pictures you want on each page.

Add all the pictures, images and other graphics you want to the book until it feels complete. Don't be afraid to rework pages numerous times until the layout and overall image feel right.

    • 3

Scan the pictures into the computer if you drew them by hand.

    • 4

Organize your book in a desktop publishing program such as Adobe InDesign. Desktop publishing programs will allow you to lay out the book just as you want it to be printed. These programs will also allow you to add page numbers, borders, style guides and much more to your book if you desire.

Print copies of your book on your own printer or at a copy shop. Use high quality paper to make the book look more professional.

    • 6

Print the front and back cover of the book using card stock paper so the book will have more support and be more durable.

    • 7

Bind the book. The easiest way to bind the book is to use staples. However, at copy shops they should have several binding options, including coil bound and saddle stitch, which are more professional quality.
