How to Use Publish on Demand on Amazon

Amazon.com's on-demand publishing company, CreateSpace, allows users to upload music, movies or books and have CreateSpace publish and distribute them. CreateSpace is a self-publishing tool that manufactures and distributes the product to outlets outlined in the terms and conditions. With print-on-demand technology, the product is produced and sent to a buyer upon request. The creator is not required to purchase a minimum amount of copies of his or her product. The creator also determines the selling price, which then determines the royalty that he or she will earn.

Instructions

    • 1
Books are just one of a few items that can be distributed through CreateSpace.com.

Sign up for CreateSpace and read the terms and conditions. Evaluate the different publishing options. Determine which options work best for your product. There are different packages, each available for a fee, that increase the number of outlets in which the item is made available. The basic package allows you to create your product for free, with your only payment being for a proof copy.

    • 2
Royalties are earned by the creator for each item purchased.

Input information about your product in the information fields. Include the names of all the creators involved, and any additional information that you want to include. This will be used for the e-store on CreateSpace.com and for any creator info fields on outlet websites like Amazon.com. Inputting this information will generate a product number and ISBN.

Determine the price of the product as well. Use the CreateSpace royalty chart to determine how much money will be earned according to different pricing rates.

Format the product correctly so that it uploads properly.

Format the product according to the instructions given by CreateSpace. These will vary according to the product (book, DVD or CD) and elements. Upload the product to CreateSpace by following the directions carefully.

Creators can design their product's cover.

Create a cover with CreateSpace's cover design tool. Choose a cover template and upload any images onto the template that you want for the cover. Make sure that the image rights belong to you. Add text for the front and back covers of the product, including title, creator(s) and any additional information. Press "Complete" when finished.

    • 5
The item will be mailed to the creator for proofing.

Verify that all information is correct, including the formatting and cover image. Then click "Submit for Proofing." This will send the product to the CreateSpace team for evaluation. The team will let you know if the product's proof copy can be ordered or not. If necessary, make any changes to the file that CreateSpace requests or suggests. If no changes are needed, hit the "Order Proof Copy" button. Input your payment information (as users have to pay for proof copies) and wait for the proof copy to come in the mail.

Making the product available is as easy as one click.

Evaluate the proof copy when the product arrives in the mail. Determine if the item works correctly and/or is formatted properly. If it isn't, make any necessary changes to the item's file or design and resubmit for proofing. If the product is ready for publishing, sign in to your CreateSpace account and hit "Publish." This will make the product available online.
