Cravell gained notoriety as a legal academic at *Melbourne Law School* in Australia, before leaving academia for work in the private sector.[2] He has written about the Australian Law Commission's reports on native title and its influence on the High Court of Australia.[3][4] He was also a contributing editor of the *Melbourne University Law Review*.[5]
As R. Cravell, he is the author of more than a dozen novels and short stories, with a recurring character named "Inspector Moloney". Many of his books have been set in the Australian Alps and feature mountaineering themes.[2][6]
