The earliest known mathematician from the Indian subcontinent was Aryabhata. He lived sometime between 476 and 550 AD in Kusumapura, which is present-day Patna, India. Aryabhata was an astronomer and mathematician who developed a number of important theorems and concepts, including the concept of zero, the decimal system, and a variety of trigonometric functions. His work, the Aryabhatiya, was later translated into Arabic and Latin and helped to spread Indian mathematics to the rest of the world.
