First Time Book-Writing Grants

Grants and awards are given annually to first-time book writers to help further their skills, and share their stories with the world. These grants can help pay for studies or living expenses that may otherwise be difficult to maintain. Grants for first-time book writers can also help motivate these authors, while allowing them to build the confidence needed to pursue a book-writing career.
  1. Boston Public Library Writing Grant

    • The Boston Public Writing grant is awarded to first-time or emerging children's book writers by the Boston Public Library. Writers in the Boston area can apply every year to be considered for the grant, and a winner is chosen after all submissions have been reviewed. Winners will receive support from the Boston Public Library and will be permitted to use their special collections for literary use. A grant of $20,000 is awarded to a selected first-time author, and paid over a nine-month period. First-time book writers will also have the opportunity to connect with other writers and artists within the community through events held at the library.

Lee and Low Books New Voices Award and Grant

    • The Lee and Low New Voices award and grant is given to minorities who write picture books for children of color. The books can be written in the form of a poem, non-fiction or fiction, and must be geared toward children who are between the ages of 5 to 12. The winners will receive a regular publication contract and a grant of $1,000, as well as first-time writer royalties. The New Voices award and grant is aimed at encouraging first-time book writers of color to create stories that relate to young minorities, which will help them understand the world around them.

    James Jones Fellowship Grant

    • The James Jones Literacy Society awards yearly grants to first time unpublished novel writers who currently have a work in progress. Winners are granted $10,000, while runner-ups are awarded $750 for manuscripts submitted. A panel of judges review the submissions, and winners will be announced and notified once determined. First prize winners must attend the James Jones Literacy Society conference to receive the grant and accept the award. The first-time winner will also have an excerpt from their winning manuscript published in the Provincetown Arts magazine.
