How to Find a Creative Writing Course

Creative writing courses can be found in many different places. Learn to write short fiction, novels, personal essays or poetry. Local newspapers or journals that cater to writers may offer sound leads on locating creative writing instruction. Schools, youth clubs, adult education facilities or private instructors may all be sources that you can take advantage of in your area. If you live too far from any of these educational outlets, explore distance-learning options that will allow you to learn at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Seek out adult education courses that may be held at your local high school, community college or university. Often, schools offering adult education courses will publish a catalog of courses. Call the school and ask to be put on the institution's mailing list. When new courses are offered, you will be notified in time to choose the course that's right for you and sign up for it.

    • 2

Check community bulletin boards and forums for listings of local writers groups. Private, informal groups can sometimes be helpful sources from which you can learn about creative writing. Local libraries and bookstores may offer bulletin boards on which writers can post notices about ongoing groups or those beginning to be formed. Members may offer advice and suggestions about your writing, and you will be called on by others to offer the same to them. The group may allow members to complete creative writing assignments during the meeting, after which the group can evaluate and discuss each person's essay discussed.

Call your local college or university and ask administrators if the institution offers distance-learning course. Some may allow you to take a university-level creative writing course at home via the Internet. To take art in this kind, you'll likely need a high-speed Internet connection, a computer and perhaps some writing software. Often, online writing courses offer you a Web-browser-based template into which you can type your writing assignments, and then all class members' assignments can be shared with the instructor and other class members.
