Find a quiet space away from high traffic areas or areas that are generally fairly loud like the kitchen or family room. A quiet space without distractions will allow you to focus more on your work and be more productive in the time you have.
Remove any unnecessary items that will distract you from the room if you don’t need them for your work. For example, if you choose a room with a television in it take the television out or put it in a cabinet that can be closed. Minimizing distractions and outside influence is important for many creative writers.
Install a desk that allows you to easily access and use whatever writing device you prefer, whether that is a computer, typewriter or pen and paper. File cabinets for storing notes and alternate ideas, as well as a space on your desk for reference books like a dictionary and thesaurus are also ideal. However, you should try to keep clutter to a minimum in your creative space.
Paint the walls a color you like or you think will help you in your writing. Soothing colors like blue can help to stimulate and clear the mind, while bright colors like yellow can help you to feel more confident and creative. Colors are largely a personal choice, so if you are unsure of what color to paint your room, try painting portions of the wall in blocks and living with them for a few weeks to see what works best for you.
Use task lighting as well as overhead lighting in your work space. Task lighting can make reading and working easier if you are trying to write in the evening when you are sleepy. As an added benefit, being able to change the amount of light in your room can help create different moods if you are writing for prolonged periods of time.
Hang curtains, blinds or shades in the room so you have the ability to control the amount of natural light. If you feel particularly self-conscious when you are writing, window coverings can help make your space feel more private and insular.
