How to Cite MLA Style of a Photo From the Web in Your Bibliography

The Internet is a visual medium. Unlike conventional print sources you might use in developing your paper or discussion, the Internet offers an ideal vehicle for presenting images of the world, its people and its events -- both past and present. Many of these images are taken from the collections and catalogs of university archives. Most museums make a selection of their holdings available online as well. If you want to cite a photograph from the Internet in your bibliography, follow the Modern Language Association of America's guidelines.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the last name of the photographer first, first name or initial last separated by a comma and with a period at the end. For example, write "Tune, C."

    • 2

Write the title of the photograph followed by a period. For example, write "Tune, C. Caisse des dépôts et consignations." Italicize the title in an actual MLA citation.

    • 3

Write the year the photograph was taken, followed by a period. For example, write "Tune, C. Caisse des dépôts et consignations. 1871?" Note that a question mark replaces the period in this example because the date of the photograph is uncertain.

    • 4

Write the name of the institution where the photograph is located followed by a period. For example, write "Tune, C. Caisse des dépôts et consignations. 1871? Northwestern University Library Special Collections."

    • 5

Write the title of the database or website where the photograph is available followed by a period. For example, write "Tune, C. Caisse des dépôts et consignations. 1871? Northwestern University Library Special Collections. The Siege and Commune of Paris, 1870-1871." Italicize the title of the database or website in an actual MLA citation.

    • 6

Write the word "Web" followed by a period to indicate the medium of publication. For example, write "Tune, C. Caisse des dépôts et consignations. 1871? Northwestern University Library Special Collections. The Siege and Commune of Paris, 1870-1871. Web."

    • 7

Write the day, month and year of the date you accessed the photograph followed by a period. For example, write "Tune, C. Caisse des dépôts et consignations. 1871? Northwestern University Library Special Collections. The Siege and Commune of Paris, 1870-1871. Web. 11 July 2011."
