How to Reference a Handbook Using APA

The topics of scholarship can take on protean and shifting forms, but one dimension of your study will be consistent and predictable: your citing of references according to the style preferred by the organization or entity for which you write. The American Psychological Association (APA), for example, sets the guidelines you should follow when writing in APA style. Use formatting the APA recommends in its publication manual when you want to correctly cite a handbook you use in your research.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the last name of the handbook author first and the initial or initials of the author's first name, separated by a comma and followed by a period. Place a single space between each initial. For example, write "Naylor, R. E. L."

    • 2

Write the abbreviation "Ed." within parentheses and followed by a period if the handbook has an editor but no stated author. The abbreviation stands for "Editor." For example, write "Naylor, R. E. L. (Ed.)."

    • 3

Write the year of publication within parentheses and followed by a period. For example, write "Naylor, R. E. L. (Ed.). (2002)."

    • 4

Write the title of the handbook followed by a period. Capitalize only the first word of the title and any proper nouns like names (North America, Paris, Gatorade) in the title. For example, write "Naylor, R. E. L. (Ed.). (2002). Weed management handbook." Italicize the title in an actual APA citation.

    • 5

Write the city and state of the place of publication of the handbook you are citing, separated by a comma and followed by a colon. For example, write "Naylor, R. E. L. (Ed.). (2002). Weed management handbook. Hoboken, NJ:."

    • 6

Write the name of the handbook's publisher followed by a period. For example, write "Naylor, R. E. L. (Ed.). (2002). Weed management handbook. Hoboken, NJ: Wiley."

    • 7

Write the handbook author's or editor's name and the year of publication within parentheses and separated by a comma for an in-text citation according to APA style. For example, write "(Naylor, 2002)." Place only the year of publication in parentheses if you use the author's or editor's name in your sentence. An example: "According to Naylor (2002) ..."
