The story begins with Tub and his older brother Kenny going hunting in the woods near their home. Tub is excited about the hunt, but he is also apprehensive because he knows that Kenny is a volatile and unpredictable person. As they walk through the woods, Kenny becomes increasingly irritated and begins to take his anger out on Tub. He eventually accuses Tub of being a "baby" and pushes him to the ground.
Tub lies in the snow, feeling sorry for himself and wondering why Kenny is so mean to him. He reflects on his family's poverty and the difficult circumstances they live in, and he begins to feel a sense of hopelessness. However, he is also determined to prove himself to Kenny and show him that he is not a "baby."
Tub eventually gets up and continues hunting. He is determined to kill a deer, and he is eventually successful. He returns home with the deer, and Kenny is impressed. He finally acknowledges Tub's abilities and tells him that he is proud of him.
