Why did author Miller write The Crucible?

The Crucible by Arthur Miller was written as an allegory to criticize Senator Joseph McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), who pursued those whom they considered to be Communists or Soviet sympathizers. Miller used the Salem witch trials to parallel the fear, distrust, and paranoia fueled by McCarthyism in the 1950s. Through this allegorical play, Miller aimed to caution and denounce political ideologies characterized by unfounded accusations and fear.
